Within the five parts of this initial stage of the good friend of the dwelling of arousing the mind, the first, adducing and encouraging, contains four: 1. the name of the place; 2. the name of the person; 3. instructing the inquiry; 4. praising the virtues. First, as for the country within the place: it expresses the meaning of the scope of gathering beings. However, the beginning of these ten dwellings is what is rejoiced in by the stage of faith, and so it is called "Delightful." As for the mountain: according to its characteristics, it is secluded and quiet, where sages and noble ones abide, and is also a place for cultivating samādhi. If considered in terms of dharma, it expresses that the stage of dwelling towers high above the gate of faith. Being named "Harmony" (Miśraka) is because the monk attains correspondence with samādhi therein, hence it is called "Harmony." Furthermore, causing Sudhana to correspond with the stage of dwelling is also called "Harmony." Again, Master Bian says: hearing-perfuming harmonizes with the nature of understanding, transforming into the basis of the noble one; therefore one enters the dwelling of arousing the mind. Second, regarding the person's name: the meaning of "monk" is as explained before. Because he has just emerged from an ordinary worldling, he is represented by a monk. Checking the Indian manuscript, the Sanskrit name is Meghaśrī: megha here means "cloud"; śrī here means "virtue"; conforming to that, he should be named the monk Meghasri (Cloud of Virtue). But "cloud" has four meanings: 1. the meaning of omnipresence; 2. the meaning of moistening; 3. the meaning of overshadowing; 4. the meaning of pouring down rain. "Virtue" also has four meanings: 1. the virtue of concentration; 2. the virtue of merit; 3. the virtue of compassion; 4. the virtue of wisdom. Matching these with the four meanings of "cloud" in order can be understood. Furthermore, the eye of concentration is universally opened, seeing the Buddha's fine virtues like clouds; the name is established from sphere and wisdom. Moreover, seeing many Buddhas with the universal eye is like clouds; possessing these virtues, his name was established. This sūtra is the Khotan manuscript, which translates the name as Guṇamegha (Cloud of Merit); the meaning is also similar and can be understood. Third, from "You should go to him" downward: encouraging him to go and instructing the inquiry. Within the inquiry, the ten questions are as before, and so it raises the first two up to the tenth. Fourth, from "Good son" downward: praising that monk's virtues, causing him to depart with joy. Adducing the Dharma to encourage cultivation is concluded.
