Regarding the good friend of the sixth practice, good manifestation: first, within adducing the Dharma to encourage cultivation, the country named Benefiting Roots (Śūradṛḍha): "country" is the boundary of the objective sphere and rank. Prajñā, being free from inversion and according with principle, is named "real" (śūra); illuminating and giving birth to what follows, it is named "sharp roots" (dṛḍha); this is relying on the place to reveal the sixth practice. "City" protects the outside and guards the inside, which is the function of sublime wisdom. Excluding the narrow and taking the broad, it is called "universal"; entering and roaming through without obstruction, it is again called "gate." "Universal" is the gate, and the "universal gate" is the city; both are karmadhāraya compounds. This is distinguished in terms of the Dharma. Another explanation: the city gathers the retinue and is that toward which many resort; hence it is named Samantamukha (Universal Gate). This is explained in terms of concrete facts. The elder Samantanetra-sugandha: his wisdom illuminates faculties like medicine, universally perfuming sentient beings; hence he is named thus.
