First, explaining the name: Dharma has the meaning of a standard that sustains; generally there are four kinds, namely: teaching, principle, practice, and fruit. Wheel has the meaning of that which is formed, and also has four [meanings]: (1) the meaning of perfection, because it is free of deficiency; (2) the meaning of being endowed with virtues, because the hub, spokes, rim, and so forth are all complete; (3) the meaning of efficacy, namely crushing and rolling over afflictive hindrances; (4) the meaning of motion, namely going from here to there—that is, from the Buddha to sentient beings—and also going from there to here—that is, from sentient beings to the Buddha fruit. Dharma is itself the wheel: this is a karmadhāraya compound. Furthermore, wheel is a metaphor, compared to the jewel-wheel of a cakravartin; that is, the wheel of the Dharma: this is a tatpuruṣa compound.
