Three, generating the mind [of bodhi]: from being bound completely by fetters and not recognizing even the names of the Triratna, one initially gives rise to a single thought of faith and so forth. This is in terms of the initial teaching, as in the Benye jing (and so forth). For the final teaching, it is as in the section on cultivating the mind of faith in the Awakening of Faith (and so forth). For the round teaching, it is as in the beginning of the "Xianshou Chapter" (and so forth). Because the Hīnayāna is not this, it is not explained in terms of it. The sudden teaching has no stages, so it is also not explained (and so forth). It is also acceptable that the Hīnayāna has the meaning of initial faith, as in the Hīnayāna treatises (and so forth). In the sudden [teaching], there is also faith (and so forth).
