First, in the first assembly, Samantabhadra, while in samādhi, contemplates the five oceans and expounds the ten knowledges. The 'five oceans' are: first, the ocean of all worlds; second, the ocean of all sentient beings; third, the ocean of karma of the dharmadhātu; fourth, the ocean of desires, inclinations, and faculties; fifth, the ocean of all Buddhas of the three times. The 'ten knowledges' are: first, the knowledge of the formation and destruction of the ocean of all worlds; second, the knowledge of responding to the realm of sentient beings; third, the knowledge of the dharmadhātu; fourth, the knowledge of the Tathāgata's sovereignty; fifth, the knowledge of turning the Dharma wheel; sixth, the knowledge of the powers, fearlessnesses, and unshared dharmas; seventh, the knowledge of light, praise, and sound; eighth, the knowledge of the three ways of teaching and transforming sentient beings; ninth, the knowledge of the indestructibility of the Dharma-gates of immeasurable samādhis; tenth, the knowledge of the Tathāgata's manifold sovereignties.
