17.3

初來意者，先辨會來，前信、此解，義次第故。又答十住問總有二段，前信是住之方便，此明正位，故次來也。二品來，前品說信究竟，此品趣後說住，故次來也。

First, as for the reason for its occurrence: we first explain the occurrence of the assembly: the preceding was faith and this is understanding, by reason of sequential meaning. Furthermore, in answering the questions on the ten abodes there are two sections in total: the preceding faith is the preliminary means for the abodes, and this clarifies the actual stages; hence it follows next. Second, as for the occurrence of the chapter: the preceding chapter explained the culmination of faith, and this chapter proceeds toward the subsequent explanation of the abodes; hence it follows next.
