Thirty-five: Giving the heart. First is the practice of giving. Second, in the practice of pariṇāmanā, it first discerns the intention and next reveals the vows, of which there are twenty minds. In the first, where it says "vajragarbha," "garbha" (treasury) means solidity, like the heartwood of a tree; a vajra is also solid, which is the wisdom of the Buddha stage, indestructible by worldly phenomena, as explained in the first phenomenon among the ten kinds of courageous phenomena in the Chapter on the Inconceivable. In the second, externally the svastika mark is displayed to symbolize the auspiciousness of the ten thousand virtues; internally wisdom accords with tathatā, which is called the vajradhātu. "Dhātu" means nature; because it accords with the nature, it is solid like vajra and cannot be damaged; because it accomplishes wisdom, it is sharp like vajra and destroys afflictions that are hard to destroy. Therefore, in the section on receiving the office on the tenth stage, it is called the pectoral mark of vajra-adornment virtue. Both the Chapter on Inconceivable Qualities and [the Chapter on] Transcending the World contain this mind, which is largely identical in name. The ninth pariṇāmanā and [the Chapter on] Transcending the World also name it "vajradhātu-root" and "vajra-flame-root"; these names are also established with the designation "root" because the pure mental sovereign has the meaning of an augmenting condition for non-conceptual wisdom. The "banner of great courage" takes the meaning of subjugation. The "firm banner" takes the meaning of not being destroyed by others. "Donning the vajra armor" is the meaning of the great vow. The rest are all intelligible.
