Thirty-nine: Giving fingers and toes, with ten vows of pariṇāmanā. Slender and long refers to measurement; plump and round refers to form; red copper refers to color; able to grasp refers to strength. Here wisdom is taken as fingers and toes; the secondary characteristics are wondrous. The mention of "ten powers" means that each individual finger can support all worlds, and so forth. "Even" means not irregular. As for "wheel marks and so forth," according to the Sanskrit text, it says: one vows that all sentient beings will attain the tips of their ten fingers, on the inside of which there are thousand-spoked wheel marks, while within the remaining joints there are puṇḍarīka (?) and svastika marks, adorning them in alternation. According to this, the word "round" should be "full vase" (pūrṇaghaṭa), and the word "turning to the right" should be "nandyāvarta." If according to the Guanfo sanmei hai jing, at the tip of each finger joint twelve wheel marks appear. In the eighth [vow], according to the Sanskrit text, one vows to attain fingers with marks of great lotus and nandyāvarta, which are actually turning to the right. The "karmic retribution of the ten powers" is also the ten kinds of great Nārāyaṇa banners, courageous phenomena. The marks are slender and so forth; the characteristics are exquisitely wondrous. Some say that "swirling svastika character" refers to the Chinese text. According to the Guanfo sanmei hai jing, the fingertips each have a svastika mark, and between the dots of the svastika mark there are thousand-spoked wheel marks. As for the webbing, the sūtra says: "When the fingers are clenched it is not visible; when opened it immediately appears, clear and lovely like a net of genuine pearls." The rest is intelligible. For the purpose, the phrase "attaining a pure mind" is because attaining the fingers stems from the mind.
