Third, the ten meanings of 'Expansive' (guang): 'Guang' means numerous; because functions are manifold and flourish, encompassing everything without exhaustion. Thus, the previous ten are all numerous; that is, clarifying that one pervading all is called 'great', and one subsuming all is called 'expansive'; it can also be the reverse. This is an explanation by way of separating them.
If one combines and explains the two characters 'Broad and Expansive' (fangguang; vaipulya), there are likewise ten meanings:
1. The meaning of broad reliance: the verbal teachings are manifold and extensive, serving as the reliance for sentient beings.
2. The meaning of broad proclamation: proclaiming and expounding vast and profound dharmas.
3. The meaning of broad destruction: destroying all obstructions without remainder.
4. The meaning of broad transcendence: no dharmas can be compared to it.
5. The meaning of broad remedy: fully subsuming boundless remedial dharmas to serve as the remedy.
6. The meaning of broad gathering: universally gathering boundless disparate dharmas.
7. The meaning of broad virtue: fully gathering the various superior virtues of the two adornments.
8. The meaning of broad production: capable of producing an ocean of immeasurable, vast fruits.
9. The meaning of broad severance: not something that can be known by the reckoning of ordinary mind and consciousness.
10. The meaning of broad knowing: fully equipped with the knowledge of all aspects (sarvākārajñatā), completely destroying the obstruction of wrong views without remainder.
Among these ten meanings, the first four are the four meanings in the eleventh fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā, and the latter six are the six meanings in the first fascicle of the Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya.
