Second, explaining the name. The name of the assembly has two [aspects]: in terms of place, it is called the Assembly of the Re-convening at the Hall of Universal Light, because the second assembly had already gathered here; the meaning of repeating it is as before. In terms of Dharma, it explains the Assembly of Expounding the Universal Dharma. Second, regarding the chapter title: concentration (dhyāna/samādhi) means one-pointedness of mind; ten is the round ultimate of numbers. Because Samantabhadra's profound concentration and marvelous functions are boundless, ten is used to reveal inexhaustibility; hence it is called the 'Chapter on the Ten Concentrations,' which is a compound with a numerical determinator. If according to the Sanskrit text, it is fully called the 'Chapter on the Tathāgata's Ten Samādhis'; because the samādhi of equal enlightenment above is identical with the Buddha and is the practice of all Buddhas of the three times, it is called the 'Tathāgata Samādhi.' The translator, because the meaning extends through both cause and fruit, omitted the two words 'Tathāgata.' Furthermore, 'samādhi' translated as 'concentration' (ding), though not an exact counterpart, is rendered concisely as 'concentration' because the equal maintenance of the mind reaching one-pointedness harmonizes in meaning and import. Furthermore, the separate circulating edition is titled 'Sūtra on the Samādhi Inquired by Samacakṣus Bodhisattva'; both mention both person and Dharma. The Sanskrit text is a tatpuruṣa compound, while the separate edition is a karmadhāraya compound.
