Third, the ten kinds of practice: relying on the understanding of superior conceptions, one initiates and cultivates great practice. Conceptions reside solely in the mind, whereas practice extends through the three karmas. With empty conceptions and no practice, nothing is accomplished. These are the spheres of study and practice mentioned in the text above. In the explanation there are only nine: according to the Jin translation, the third, "skillfully training in all precepts," is missing here. Possessing all ten forms five pairs: first, transforming those below and seeking what is above; second, stopping evil and advancing in goodness; third, wondrous calming and profound contemplation; fourth, cultivating causes and adorning realms; and fifth, revering friends and serving teachers.
