Third, the two for the both conditioned and unconditioned dharmadhātu: 1. the gate of according with marks: meaning the aggregates of sensation, conception, and mental formations, plus the five kinds of matter and the eight unconditioned [dharmas]—these sixteen dharmas are cognized only by the mind-faculty, and among the eighteen dhātus are named dharmadhātu; 2. the gate of non-obstruction: meaning that the one-mind dharmadhātu fully contains two gates: first, the gate of the one mind's tathatā, and second, the gate of the one mind's arising and ceasing. Although these two gates each completely subsume all dharmas, their two states are constantly not commingled, just as the waves that subsume water are not tranquil, and the water that subsumes waves is not moving. The Fourth Dedication states: 'Displaying unconditioned dharmas within the conditioned realm without destroying the marks of the conditioned; displaying conditioned dharmas within the unconditioned realm without discriminating the nature of the unconditioned.' This clarifies the non-obstruction between noumenon and phenomena.
