Fifth, from 'Good man, from here' onward, he indicates the subsequent spiritual friend. 'Sixty yojanas' refers to cultivating the practices of the six pāramitās to purify the six sense faculties. The settlement is named Shore (Sāgara-tīra) because it is the way toward Mount Laṅkā, situated on the northern shore of the southern ocean. Now, the Sanskrit word 'Laṅkā' is translated here as 'Hard to Reach.' It also contains four meanings: first, it is formed of various precious natures, adorned and exceptionally wondrous; second, it has great light that outshines the sun and moon; third, it is lofty, prominent, wide, and vast; fourth, kings of the yakṣas and others dwell there, and the Buddha also instructed and transformed living beings there, performing superior and beneficial deeds. Its substance is indeed gems, and possessing these four meanings, it is called 'Supreme Gem,' retaining the Sanskrit phonetics. This mountain sits in the midst of the ocean, without gates on its four sides, and none but those who have attained spiritual penetrations can reach it; hence it is called 'Hard to Reach.' This symbolizes that the abode of cultivation is the path of entering the ocean of wisdom, transcending the four propositions and departing from conceptual discrimination. As for the monk Supratiṣṭhita (Good Abiding), his body abides in empty space, symbolizing that in this abode one contemplates all dharmas as like empty space, having no spatial location. He is also a monk because, not long after entering the path, one ought to rely on the Saṅgha. Moreover, first was recollecting the Buddha, next was hearing the Dharma, and now one relies on the Saṅgha to cultivate, taking the auspiciousness of the Triratna as one's refuge.
