Ninth is the upāsikā Acalā, corresponding to the Practice of Wholesome Dharmas. Ever since first generating the mind [for bodhi], there has been no dharma in which she has not attained samādhi, for afflictions and the two vehicles cannot shake her, and she also causes sentient beings' minds not to be shaken; cultivating benevolence through wisdom, she manifests as a woman living [at home]. Residing in the royal capital is because this is the station of a prince. Wisdom tallies with the real Dharma and is not destroyed by conditions, hence it is called 'firmly residing' (acalā). First, 'Proceeding to Seek in Accordance with the Teaching' has two parts: first, according with the teaching; later, proceeding to seek. The former has five parts: 1. Contemplating and cultivating the previous Dharma. 2. From 'generating joy' onward, obtaining benefit through cultivation. 'Free from turbidity' is in terms of the absence of other [influences]; 'pure' is in terms of one's own essence. 3. From 'Having contemplated thus' onward, attributing the achievement to the spiritual friend. That compassion is emphasized at this point is because the cultivation of compassion is approaching completion. 4. From 'He also thought' onward, praising the spiritual friend's abilities extensively. 5. From 'The youth Sudhana, grieving thus' onward, the confirmation and exhortation by superior conditions. Therein, first is the confirmation. The word 'deva' is used in two ways; hence the Jin translation says 'the deva-messenger of the Tathāgata and the deva following the bodhisattva.' The deva following the bodhisattva is the spirit of one's own karmic practice; the deva-messenger of the Tathāgata is the spirit gathering in beings through the Buddha's power. Whenever the stations of cultivation are established, there are always these two devas accompanying the person. Later, from 'You may go to...' onward, is exhorting him to visit the next spiritual friend. Second, from 'Then the youth Sudhana, from that...' onward, is proceeding to seek the next spiritual friend, which can be understood.
