Ninth, the ten dharmas of the river-ruling spirits: First, practice matures to rain down the Dharma, like torrential downpours that extinguish delusions and produce virtue, and like a hanging torrent's swift flow without any obstruction. Second, manifesting bodies to quell afflictions, like springs and mountain streams cleansing the mind. Third, truly scouring away defilements, with compassion and wisdom assisting each other, like azure pools and clear tarns where sky and forms mutually reflect; hence it is named 'cleansed dust and pure eyes.' Fourth, the perfect sound bringing pervasive benefit, like crashing waves giving forth resonance. Fifth, rescuing the drifting and drowning. Sixth, roots of goodness free from delusion can be called pure and cool, like Lake Anavatapta ever free from feverish affliction. Seventh, gate of giving is immeasurable, freeing others from stinginess, like pondweed, water chestnuts, and lotuses everywhere bringing delight to living things. Eighth, practicing merit accords with reality, so none who see it fail to rejoice; like deep lakes and vast dikes, this is extensive virtue. Ninth, through the power of wisdom in expedient means, diverse defilements all become pure compassion; the malice and anger of hostile beings turn instead into joy, like ten thousand leagues of waves calming down, their light reflecting over all beneath heaven. Tenth, gathering together all good deeds to make them converge in nirvāṇa, like the hundred rivers all converging in the great ocean. Converging in the ocean is due to wisdom; it is named 'ocean-virtue illumination.'
