Fifteenth, the ten dharmas of the city-ruling spirits: Some say that the ninth dharma is omitted, while the ten verses are complete. First, expedients like light mature and benefit [beings]. Second, giving medicine according to illness, causing them to take and practice it. Third, protecting the Dharma; when the Dharma endures, living beings receive merit, for teaching, principle, practice, and fruit are all protected. Fourth, inexhaustible compassionate rescue is called a 'treasury.' Fifth, understanding the Buddha's great wisdom. Sixth, manifesting bodies through expedient means. Seventh, cultivating the Buddha's virtues together. Eighth, confused about real and conventional truths, hence it is called 'ignorance and darkness'; the Buddha appears to reveal and point it out, causing them to awaken and enter. Originally confused from beginningless time, like those born blind who, although hearing metaphors, ultimately do not know milk; only when the Buddha appears in the world can they understand it. Ninth, according to the Sanskrit text, it says that the city-ruling spirit Incense Banner Adornment Topknot attained the liberation door of destroying all foul odors of afflictions and producing all fragrant odors of the nature of wisdom. That is, the primary entanglements are foul objects and residual traces are foul odors; the nature of wisdom is the fragrant substance and benefiting living beings is the fragrant odor. The fragrant odor is like clouds emerging from high mountains, inexhaustible in accord with the nature of wisdom; the foul odor is like fragrant wind rolling up mist, boundless like the emptiness of nature. For afflictions, both defilements and traces are lost; for wisdom, both self and others are benefited. Some editions also state in full: the city-ruling spirit Fragrant Topknot Adornment attained the liberation door of opening and developing living beings' pure and wondrous wisdom. This is likely also an omission in scribal transmission; the meaning is not different from the preceding. The verse mentions 'manifesting in dreams': dreams are the spirit's wandering, and are also a fraction of seeing and hearing. If one tames them even in dreams, how much more so when awake, just as Mahākātyāyana manifested dream realms for his disciples, and so forth. Tenth, the two hindrances and five covers overlap like mountains; nothing but the light of wisdom can shatter them.
