Third, the central theme and purport, also having three [parts]: First, the central theme of the section. That is, it takes the cause and fruit of cultivation-arising and cultivation-manifestation as its central theme, and causing all bodhisattvas to practice and enter into accord [with them] as its purport. Second, as for the central theme of the assembly: from a general perspective, taking the virtue of the practice of faith and understanding subsuming the stations as the central theme, and universally accomplishing the fruit of Buddhahood as the purport. This is because faith can certainly reach the stage of the Tathāgata. From an immediate perspective, faith alone is the central theme, and accomplishing the stations is the purport. If according to the extended division into ten sections, the following three chapters are taken as one section, then the fruit's function responding to capacities pervading the dharmadhātu is taken as its central theme, and giving rise to faith based on this is the purport. Therefore, this is also called the causes and fruit of the primary retribution, and is also that which is to be believed. Believing in what Dharma-gate? Believing that the Buddha's body and name are equal to sentient beings, one then knows that one's own name is like the Buddha's name. Believing that the Buddha's Dharma-gates are established according to suitability, one knows that one's own deluded thoughts and the accumulation of suffering are also completely the Dharma-gate. Believing that the radiance of the Buddha's mental karma shines everywhere, one then knows that one's own mind is never without knowing and perceiving. Therefore, the virtuous masters of ancient times also subsumed the above three chapters under the section on presenting the fruit. Third, as for the central theme of the chapter: revealing the universal pervasion of the Buddha's names is the central theme, and adapting to capacities to tame, transform, and benefit is the purport. Or, both of the above are the central theme, and generating faith is the purport.
