Fifth, contemplating the ten matters of mind. Awareness (vitarka) is gross searching; inspection (vicāra) is subtle examining; gross searching and subtle examining are indeterminate dharmas. "Discrimination" (vikalpa) means selecting with wisdom; among the three kinds of discrimination, it is discrimination of intrinsic nature; among the seven kinds of discrimination, it is spontaneous discrimination. "Various discriminations": among the three kinds, it refers to recollective and calculating discrimination; among the seven kinds, it refers to the remaining six, namely having marks, lacking marks, searching, examining, defiled, and undefiled. "Recollection" is recalling what was previously practiced, solely taking the past as its object. "Reflection" (cetanā) is deliberating with wisdom, spanning the past, future, and present; each having singular and plural, forming two types each. The above six are all subsumed under the specific-object mental factors. "Various recollections" in meaning also includes remorse (kaukṛtya). "Illusion" spans both reflection and recollection. Sleep is indeterminate; the mental consciousness also operates, but merely grasps objects in an obscure and rough manner. Light sleep involves dreams and also shares in good and evil due to the force of awareness. These ten are mental factors (caitta); because they are not separate from the mind, they are collectively called mind. The examination and refutation follow the previous [method].
