Fourth, answering the question on the great vows. There are twenty phrases: the first ten give rise to superior and pure vows; the latter ten exert the will to fulfill them. Now, in the first: these are entirely identical to the ten vows of the first stage: (1) the vow to mature sentient beings; (2) the vow to purify Buddha-lands; (3) making offerings; (4) protecting the Dharma; (5) attending and serving; (6) sharing identical wholesome roots; (7) gathering in the foremost of dharmas—dharmas reaching through to the Buddha are called "the gate of the Tathāgata"; (8) the three modes of action not being in vain; (9) fully cultivating all practices; (10) presently accomplishing sambodhi. That text, however, is extensive; following its sequence, five, seven, one, two, six, eight, three, nine, four, and ten constitute the present sequence. Second, from "Sons of the Buddha: the bodhisattva..." onward, causing the vows to be fulfilled: through these ten phrases one can fulfill the previous ten as well as many other vows. Therein, in (5), with a profound mind one can endure long; in (6), completing all, one can become great: enduring long is the virtue of the bodhisattva, and becoming great is the activity of the bodhisattva; the rest are all understandable.
