Seventeen: On giving the two things of elephants and horses. Together there are ten vows: (1) like their nature being tame and docile; (2) like going wherever one wishes; (3) resembling their flourishing strength; (4) like striding ten thousand leagues; (5) like their pace being even and upright; (6) like that elephant-jewel; (7) resembling being like a lotus flower; (8) being as swift as the wind; (9) above it was said that docility universally displays an increase in merit, whereas here it says possessing the bodhisattva stages is called the most supreme taming of elephants and horses—each has the meaning of taming, and so they are divided into two vows; (10) resembling setting up a golden banner upon them.
