Thirty-eight: Giving the skin of the body. Among the precedents cited, Bodhisattva Viśuddhagarbha has not been seen under the same name. In fascicle sixteen of the Dazhidulun, it is like the poisonous dragon that observed the one-day precepts: having its five-colored skin flayed, it patiently gave it away, and so on. The mention of the "king of deer with golden flanks" is as explained in the Dazhidulun and the Pusa benyuan ji jing, fascicle four. The deer with golden flanks rescued a drowning man; that man betrayed his kindness and informed the king to capture the deer; the broad precedent shares the same name, but was not the giving of skin. In the vow, "skin of marks and characteristics" refers to golden color and so forth. In the purpose, "purifying Buddha-fields" is because skin constitutes the external appearance.
