Second, the geyas. Forty-six and a half verses are divided into two distinct parts: first, directly versifying what precedes; second, concluding the exposition in two [verses]. Within the former, there are four parts: the first eleven verses versify the section on the initial dwelling, wherein are four: the first verse and a half versify 'relying on what body'; the next four and a half verses versify 'for what purpose'; the next two verses versify 'by what cause'; the last three verses versify 'having what characteristics.' The second, five verses, versifies the section on explaining the name: the first two and a half verses versify the characteristics of joy; the remaining versify the causes of joy. Therein, first, half a verse versifies recollecting what will be obtained, and the subsequent two verses versify recollecting what is currently obtained. Third, there are six verses that versify the section on securely dwelling in the stage: the first five lines versify the accomplishment of faith; the next seven lines versify the accomplishment of practice; the last three verses versify the accomplishment of pariṇāmanā. Fourth, from 'constantly arising...' onward, twenty-two and a half verses versify the section on evaluating superiority, wherein are three: the first six and a half verses versify the evaluation of aspiration; the next six verses, the evaluation of practice; the last ten verses, the evaluation of fruit. Therein, the first two [versify] the fruit of compliance; the next two, the fruit of setting forth; the next five and a half verses, the fruit of receiving retribution; the final half verse, the fruit of aspiration and wisdom. The concluding exposition may be understood. The First Stage is finished (from here onward one enters the thirty-fifth roll of the sūtra).
