2. Revealing identity and difference: In the Yogācāra, fascicle 44, the Mahāyāna factors of bodhi are indeed of many kinds; the thirty-seven categories are merely specific meanings among them, common to both the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna. The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] also states that the thirty-seven categories are causes of nirvāṇa, but not causes of great nirvāṇa, because immeasurable asaṃkhyeyas of path factors are the causes of great nirvāṇa. In the fifth stage below it expounds immeasurable path factors, and the "Chapter on Leaving the World" says that the path and the aids to the path are all called immeasurable; here, in terms of the assigned stage, there are only thirty-seven. If we follow the Dazhidulun, there are only thirty-seven, leaving nothing unincluded; that is, the immeasurable path factors are also within them, just as the distinctions of the Four Truths have immeasurable marks, differing only according to whether the mental practice is great or small. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says that the path factors are the bodhimanda and the cause of the dharmakāya; the Mahāsaṃnipāta calls them the Bodhisattva Precious Torch Dhāraṇī; the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] states, "If a person can contemplate the Eightfold Noble Path, they immediately see the Buddha-nature, which is called attaining the finest ghee." All these are spoken from the perspective of the Mahāyāna.
