Now, the first: the path that counters delusions is called the four applications of mindfulness. The four are body, feelings, mind, and dharmas. 'Mindfulness' refers to mindfulness and wisdom; the body and so forth are the places where this mindfulness and wisdom abide, hence they are also called 'stations of mindfulness' (smṛtyupasthāna). The Yogācārabhūmi says: 'That in which one abides is the body and so forth; that by which one abides is mindfulness and wisdom. In its true essence it is wisdom; because wisdom observes and maintains the object, and through mindfulness one comes to abide, being proximate to mindfulness, it is called "mindfulness" by contiguity.' The Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā says: 'All dharmas that are factors of awakening are established through five gateways: 1. the objective referent, 2. the essence, 3. the associates, 4. the cultivation, and 5. the fruit of cultivation. Though the text may be brief and omit some, in meaning they must all be present.'
