Fourth, the five faculties (indriya) are the expedient paths to direct realization (abhisamaya). Predominance is called 'faculty'. The intrinsic nature of the five faculties is the five [qualities] of faith and so forth; these five generally act as predominant conditions in producing supramundane dharmas. The former four can furthermore give rise to the latter, thus obtaining the name 'predominant'. And faith is the foremost, capable of giving rise to the remaining four. In the text, it first specifically clarifies the faculty of faith, and later generally reveals the remaining four. In these two sections, each first identifies what is cultivated, and later, through 'relying on', specifically reveals the characteristics of cultivation. The three topics below can be known by analogy with this. What is now cultivated is deep endurance and aspiration toward truth and reality; the remaining four are: spurring oneself on with zeal regarding what was previously believed, keeping it clearly in mind without forgetting, binding awareness to a single object, and discerning right and wrong, the rest being as explained before. However, upon first entering the Buddhadharma, one has the mind of faith, yet without samādhi and wisdom it cannot be called a 'faculty'. Now, due to the previous three topics, faith cannot be uprooted. Here, mindfulness is mindfulness within the applications of mindfulness; zeal is right striving; samādhi is the bases of psychic power; wisdom is the wisdom that takes the four truths as its object; the previous three, reaching this point, collectively obtain the name of 'faculties'. In terms of stations, they precede the path of seeing, taking the swift generation of direct realization as their fruit; now, being on the fourth stage, they take the generation of the subsequent stages as their fruit.
