Second, the causes of gathering also have ten causes: 1. Because they formerly gathered roots of goodness together with Vairocana Tathāgata. 2. Because they were formerly embraced by the Buddha's four means of embrace. 3. Because in the past, while in saṃsāra, they heard the complete Dharma. 4. Because they formerly generated the great mind [of bodhi] to protect all. 5. Because they formerly made great vows wishing to serve the Buddha. 6. Because they follow the Tathāgata without satiety. 7. Because they delight in hearing the true Dharma without mental weariness. 8. Because they are skilled at dissipating and destroying the mind of arrogance. 9. Because their merit and wisdom are already purified and their bodies are all-pervading. 10. Because they are born from the great ocean of roots of goodness of the identical dharmatā. For these many reasons, they are able to participate in this assembly. Among these, the causes of gathering also apply to the intention of gathering, and each assembly has its specific causes as appropriate, which can be deduced by reflection.
