Seventh, regarding deferring or not deferring: the good spiritual friends of the various stations all possess this—humbly considering themselves to understand only one [Dharma door] and deferring to the superior who understands many. Only the first one and the last three lack these two matters, which serves to display the eminence of the persons, because their virtues are already complete. Yet there being a dispatch [to the next spiritual friend] is in order to cause him to cultivate further without satiety, and because the Dharma doors are distinct. That Samantabhadra does not defer to the Buddha is to display that the ocean of the fruition is beyond cultivation, and because the Buddha belongs to the original assembly.
