From here below is the second, the assembly of identical birth. The text is divided into three: first, clarifying that Bodhisattva Samantabhadra attains all dharma-doors; next, the ten Samanta- ['Universal'] bodhisattvas each attain one door; finally, ten bodhisattvas of distinct names each [attain] one dharma-door. These three each have prose and verses. In the first prose on Samantabhadra, there are two parts: first, a general indication of that which is entered; second, individually showing the ten doors. Now, the first two lines first point out the essence of the dharma, and next distinguish the function of the dharma. Now, the first. Saying 'inconceivable' means that the number surpasses calculation and the noumenon transcends speech and thought. Saying 'ocean of expedients' means accomplishing phenomena without disturbing the real. Skillfully tallying with the fruit through the door of the cause, it is therefore called 'expedient'. Afterwards, from 'entering the Tathāgata' downward, it distinguishes the function of the dharma, meaning that witnessing and entering, the cause is complete; advancing and entering, the fruit is an ocean. However, before and after it only clarified entering the general through the particular, so each attained a single liberation door, just as the hundred rivers each enter the ocean. Now it clarifies entering the general through the general, like an ocean entering an ocean; hence he attains an inconceivable liberation door. Furthermore, he praises that which is able to enter as an ocean of expedients, because Samantabhadra is the leader of both the identical and distinct assemblies.
