Regarding the Commentary's stating, "Grasping the meaning according to the sound has five faults": this is the text in the Daśabhūmika-śāstra explaining the scope of the exposition. The treatise says: "First, improper faith, because generating understanding according to words does not correspond to reality. Second, falling back from vigor, because one cannot forget characteristics and advance toward the real truth. Third, deceiving others, because one speaks to people based on one's own mistaken understanding. Fourth, slandering the Buddha, because one points to one's own mistaken understanding as what the Buddha taught. Fifth, disparaging the Dharma, because one interprets profound purports with shallow and proximate understanding." The text below explains this in full. In the Commentary, "The sūtra below says, 'Even if there were a bodhisattva,'" and so forth refers to the "Chapter on the Manifestation [of the Tathāgata]," as cited previously. "The devaputra in hell" refers to the "Chapter on the Accompanying Auspicious Signs." "The great ocean and the kalpa fire" refers to the "Chapter on the Ten Grounds." Hence its verse states: / "Even if abiding in the ocean water or the kalpa fire, / One who is worthy of receiving this Dharma will surely hear it." / This is it. In the Commentary, "It is termed 'concurrent' in terms of those who have not yet awakened and entered" resolves an external objection. It is feared that someone might object: "Since there is the benefit of sudden transcendence, they are the primary audience; why call them concurrent?" The intention of the resolution is evident.
