As for the commentary's "The ten oceans contain essence and function": this is the first assembly. The ten oceans are: first, the ocean of all worlds; second, the ocean of all sentient beings; third, the ocean of all Buddhas; fourth, the ocean of all dharmadhātus; fifth, the ocean of the karma of all sentient beings; sixth, the ocean of the faculties of all sentient beings; seventh, the ocean of the wheels of Dharma of all Buddhas; eighth, the ocean of all three times; ninth, the ocean of the power of vows of all Tathāgatas; tenth, the ocean of the spiritual transformations of all Tathāgatas. The seventh, ninth, and tenth—these three are function; the rest are all essence. These ten are fundamentally possessed, and all are that which is realized; hence they are named principle. The difference among the characteristics of the ten is the dharmadhātu of phenomena. The true nature of the ten is the dharmadhātu of principle. Principle and phenomena mutually fuse, together forming the realized principle; hence it is said, "the ten oceans are principle."
