Regarding the Commentary's statement, 'the sixth, rolling up to the exhaustion of characteristics'—the character 'characteristic' (xiàng) is pronounced in the falling tone (qùshēng)—even the characteristic of a dharmadhātu free of characters does not remain. Since understanding the preceding unfolding allows one to understand this rolling up, it therefore says, 'gradually rolling up from the end.' Regarding the words 'up to not falling outside the nine assemblies,' the two words 'up to' abbreviate the later five tiers; not falling outside the nine assemblies is merely the fourth section. If fully stated, it should be: one, rolling up inexhaustible times and places to return to dust motes of heterogeneous realms; two, rolling up dust motes of heterogeneous realms to return to heterogeneous realms; three, rolling up heterogeneous realms to not fall outside dust motes of homogeneous realms; four, rolling up dust motes of homogeneous realms to not fall outside the host and companion sūtras of homogeneous lands; five, rolling up host and companion to not fall outside the host sūtra, concluding in pervading the ten directions; six, rolling up pervading the ten directions to not fall outside the nine assemblies; seven, returning to the initial assembly; eight, returning to the general title; nine, returning to principle and cognition; ten, returning to the pure dharmadhātu.
