17.42

疏「及大悲經說」者，案《大悲經》第五云「佛告阿難：『我今以是正法寶藏付囑於汝，勿令毀滅。』阿難白佛言：『我今云何修行法眼？乃至復云云何結集法眼？』佛告阿難：『我滅度後，有諸大德比丘僧眾集法毘尼時，彼諸大德摩訶迦葉最為上首。阿難！彼諸大德諸比丘眾應如是問：「世尊何處說大阿波陀那？何處說摩訶尼陀那？乃至云何處說聲聞藏、緣覺藏、菩薩藏？」阿難！時諸比丘如是問已，汝應答言：「如是我聞：一時佛在摩伽陀國菩提樹下，初成正覺。如是我聞：一時佛在伽耶城。如是乃至云如是我聞：一時佛在拘尸那城力士生地、阿利羅跋提河邊、娑羅雙樹間。乃至云佛說經已，一切大眾皆大歡喜頂戴奉行。」阿難！汝應如是結集法眼。』」餘可例知。上皆原由，即出其原本事由。

Regarding the commentary's "and as explained in the *Mahākaruṇā-sūtra*": examining the fifth fascicle of the *Mahākaruṇā-sūtra*, it says: "The Buddha told Ānanda: 'I now entrust this treasure-store of the correct Dharma to you; do not let it be destroyed.' Ānanda said to the Buddha: 'How should I now practice the Dharma-eye?' up to 'How should we compile the Dharma-eye?' The Buddha told Ānanda: 'After my parinirvāṇa, when the assembly of venerable bhikṣu monks compiles the Dharma and Vinaya, among those venerables Mahākāśyapa will be the foremost. Ānanda! Those venerable bhikṣus should ask like this: "Where did the World-Honoured One teach the Great Avadāna? Where did he teach the Mahānidāna?" up to "Where did he teach the Śrāvakapiṭaka, the Pratyekabuddhapiṭaka, and the Bodhisattvapiṭaka?" Ānanda! When those bhikṣus have asked thus, you should reply: "Thus have I heard: At one time the Buddha was beneath the bodhi tree in the country of Magadha, having newly realized right awakening. Thus have I heard: At one time the Buddha was in the city of Gayā." And so on, up to "Thus have I heard: At one time the Buddha was in the city of Kuśinagara, at the wrestling ground of the Mallas, beside the river Hiraṇyavatī, between the twin śāla trees." Up to, "When the Buddha had finished preaching the sūtra, all in the great assembly were greatly delighted, reverently accepted it, and put it into practice." Ānanda! You should compile the Dharma-eye in this manner.'" The rest can be understood by analogy. All the above are the original circumstances—that is, presenting the original narrative circumstances.
