17.53

疏「若離釋者」下，第二離釋信聞。於中有二：先依《智論》合如是二字通釋，是信順之辭。然論具云「佛法大海，信為能入，智為能度。如是者即是淨信也。若人心中有清淨信，是人能入佛法；若無淨信，當知是人不入佛法。不信者言是事不如是，是不信相；信者言是事如是，是信相。」

Regarding the commentary's "If explained separately" and so forth: second is explaining trust and hearing separately. Within this are two parts: first, relying on the *Upadeśa*, explaining the two characters ru and shi combined as a general expression of faithful compliance. However, the treatise states in full: "In the great ocean of the Buddha's Dharma, faith is that by which one enters, and wisdom is that by which one crosses over. 'Thus' (rushi) is precisely pure faith. If a person has pure faith in their mind, this person is able to enter the Buddha's Dharma; if they lack pure faith, you should know that this person does not enter the Buddha's Dharma. One who lacks faith says, 'This matter is not so'—this is the characteristic of non-faith. One who has faith says, 'This matter is so'—this is the characteristic of faith."
