Regarding the Commentary's text from "If based on producing faith in living beings" onwards: this is the second [part], which directly sets forth what to adopt and reject. Within this text there are two parts: first, generally adopting the three meanings; second, definitively selecting in terms of the doctrinal tradition. In both, the text is understandable. As for the statement "directly opposing the non-Buddhist a-u (oṃ)": the Śataśāstra says: "Non-Buddhists establish a-u as auspicious." The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "In antiquity Brahmā had seventy-two letters to instruct the world and transform living beings. In later times, as the merit of living beings grew increasingly diminished, Brahmā thereupon swallowed back seventy letters, leaving one letter at each corner of his mouth: these were 'a' and 'u', also said as 'a-ou', being merely the light and heavy forms of Sanskrit pronunciation." The rest is understandable.
