Regarding the commentary's "Thought-moment by thought-moment perfectly interpenetrating, akin to an evening dream traversing lifetimes": this is the eighth approach, different temporal phases being established in separation throughout the ten periods. That is, in the "Chapter on Leaving the World," the bodhisattva has ten ways of explaining the three periods of time: explaining the past in the past, explaining the present in the past, explaining the future in the past, explaining the past in the present, explaining equality in the present, explaining the future in the present, explaining the past in the future, explaining the present in the future, explaining inexhaustibility in the future, and explaining the single thought-moment in the three periods of time. The previous nine are specific, and the single thought-moment is general; hence they are named the ten periods, because the three periods of time are mutually conditioned and mutually subsume one another. A single thought-moment is endowed with ten to show inexhaustibility; thus a single thought-moment is measureless kalpas, and measureless kalpas are a single thought-moment. The "Chapter on the Practices of Samantabhadra" says: "Measureless and countless kalpas / are understood as immediately a single thought-moment. / Knowing that thought-moments are also no-thought, / one thus sees the worldly realms." It is like the dream of a single evening traversing several lifetimes. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: "Dwelling in a dream, one thinks years have passed; / upon waking, it was only a moment. / Therefore, though time is measureless, / it is subsumed in a single kṣaṇa." The "Chapter on Leaving the World" says: "Like a person in a sleeping dream / who performs various deeds: / though hundreds of thousands of years pass, / a single night has not yet ended." Thus Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly, napping for a hundred years. Such instances are vast!
