Regarding the commentary’s statement, "Hearing the profound without fear," and so forth: the extensively profound meaning refers to emptiness. When hearing emptiness preached, one considers it identical to nihilistic extinction, and therefore it makes people fearful. Thus the *Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā* states: "Since it is neither previously existent nor subsequently non-existent, its intrinsic nature is constantly empty; do not give rise to alarm or fear." "Hearing the shallow without doubt": "shallow" refers to engaging in affairs with many doors of upāya, which gives rise to doubt. Now knowing that it accords with what is appropriate, what doubt is there? "Hearing what is neither profound nor shallow": doubting that there is nothing to rely upon makes body and mind bewildered. Now knowing that the non-profound is wondrous existence and the non-shallow is true emptiness, parting from the characteristics of body and mind is true vigor, which can reach this realm. Furthermore, these three lines are also the three contemplations: first emptiness, next provisionality, and finally the middle way. When the three lines are heard together, in a single thought all are unified.
