The chapter on the ten powers under the seventh [bodhisattva], Kāñcanārcis Bodhisattva. In the commentary, from "The sūtra texts below repeatedly clarify the ten powers..." downward, the commentary's text is divided into three: first, the reason for establishing the chapter; second, from "However, the Mahāprajñāpāramitā..." downward, broadly referencing others' explanations; third, from "Now briefly..." downward, opening the sections to explain the text. The present first part is the first gate among the seven gates. Fearing people might say that our tradition values only names and characteristics, it broadly brings out this intent. The text has five intents: first, because the sūtra texts are numerous, by explaining this one section, other places will follow suit; second, they are uncommon virtues; third, all Buddhas equally possess them—these two are two gates in the Yogācāra[-bhūmi]; fourth, bodhisattvas generate the mind based on them, which is the "Ten Abodes Chapter," for without recognizing the ten powers, how could one generate the mind? Fifth, pure conduct leads to contemplation, and without comprehending the ten powers it is not true pure conduct.
