23.20

疏「初兩會問果廣因略為成信解故」者，初會四十句問，初二十句問果、次十句通問因果、唯後十句問因，故云因略。第二會四十問，唯第二十句問因，餘三十句皆是問果，故云果廣。初會為成於信，舉果令信故。第二會為成於解，果相難知，故廣舉之。

Regarding the commentary's statement, "In the first two assemblies, questioning the effects extensively and the causes cursorily is done to establish faith and understanding": in the first assembly there are forty phrases of questions: the first twenty phrases ask about the effects, the next ten phrases ask about both causes and effects together, and only the final ten phrases ask about causes; hence they are said to be cursorily about causes. In the second assembly there are forty questions: only the twentieth phrase asks about causes, and the remaining thirty phrases are all questions about effects; hence they are said to be extensively about effects. The first assembly is for establishing faith, adducing effects to generate faith. The second assembly is for establishing understanding: since the characteristics of the effect are difficult to know, they are adduced extensively.
