23.3

疏「四分之中已明教起」者，四分即舉果勸樂生信等分四。以四分科：第一會名舉果勸樂生信分，六品分三：初品明教起因緣分、次二品明說法儀式分、後三品正陳法海分。初分已竟。次有說法儀式二品經來，此是四分科中第一分內三分之中第二分來。舉其大科，故云四分之中，對前序、正、流通三故。

Regarding the Commentary's statement "among the four divisions, the arising of the teaching has already been explained": the four divisions are the four divisions such as "adducing the result to inspire aspiration and generate faith." Dividing by the four divisions: the first assembly is named "the division of adducing the result to inspire aspiration and generate faith," in which six chapters are divided into three: the initial chapter explains the division of the causes and conditions for the arising of the teaching; the next two chapters explain the division of the protocol for expounding the Dharma; the latter three chapters explain the division of directly presenting the ocean of Dharma. The first division is already complete. Next follow the two chapters of the sūtra on the protocol for expounding the Dharma; this is the second division among the three subdivisions within the first division of the fourfold division scheme. Adducing its major heading, it is therefore called "among the four divisions," in contrast to the earlier three of prologue, main doctrine, and transmission.
