Regarding the commentary's statement “Second, below ‘this samādhi’, revealing the name of the concentration”: The commentary's text has three parts: first, explaining the text; second, revealing the reason for entering; third, recounting previous agreements and disagreements. In the first part, it first points to what precedes, and then below “Furthermore, there is” it gives the direct explanation. The text has two explanations: first, explaining in terms of vast arising and ceasing; second, explaining in terms of light shining everywhere. In the former, it first treats it generally and then specifically. Here, vi means vast. rocana means arising. na means ceasing. This is the interpretation of Anguo. Regarding the commentary's statement below “What all Buddhas possess is boundless loving-kindness and compassion”: Second, the extensive explanation. First, it illuminates cultivation and completion. The phrase “the characteristic of arising has ended” conveys the meaning of the Awakening of Faith. That text has three subtle characteristics—namely, karma, evolving, and manifesting—which are collectively called the characteristic of arising and reside in the ālayavijñāna. Here, in saying “ended”, the treatise states: “When the bodhisattva stages are exhausted, the awakening mind first arises. The mind has no initial characteristic; because it is far removed from subtle thoughts, it attains the perception of the mind's nature. The mind is then permanently abiding, called ultimate awakening.” The explanation says: Being far removed from subtle thoughts is precisely the ending of the characteristic of arising. Hence it next cites the Nirvāṇa Sūtra's being free from existence and permanently abiding; this is in the fourth fascicle: being free from existence is the cessation of the characteristic of arising. The meaning of “permanently abiding” is identical to the Awakening of Faith above.
