Regarding the Commentary's passage below: "Therefore the Lotus [Sūtra]...", it cites proof. "My pure land is not destroyed" proves the self-enjoyment [land] and establishes the above "in terms of the Buddha." "Gods and humans always fill it" proves the other-enjoyment [land] and so forth, establishing the above "good karma." They prove the above in order, so the sūtra text is cited for its meaning. If quoted in full, the sūtra says: "When sentient beings see the end of a kalpa, / And it is burned by a great fire, / This land of mine is secure and tranquil, / Gods and humans always fill it. / Grounds, groves, halls, and pavilions / Are adorned with various jewels, / Jewel trees abound in flowers and fruit, / Where sentient beings disport and take joy. / The gods strike heavenly drums, / Constantly making various musical sounds, / Raining down māndarava flowers, / Scattering them over the Buddha and the great assembly. / My pure land is not destroyed, / Yet the multitude sees it burned up, / Gloomy, terrified, and full of sufferings— / All such [woes] fill it completely." Thereupon it says, "These sinful sentient beings..." and next says, "Those who cultivate merit..."
