Regarding the commentary's "as the father of bodhisattvas, it is explained first": this is from the text of the Dazhidulun. The treatise states: "A bodhisattva takes the prajñāpāramitā as mother and the pratyutpanna-samādhi as father." "Pratyutpanna" is the recollection of the Buddha (buddhānusmṛti); here it is translated as the "samādhi of the Buddha standing [before one]." Because recollecting the Buddha enters into concrete phenomena through the real and is the same as upāya, it is able to be called the father. Furthermore, recollecting the Buddha results in becoming a Buddha; thus it is the direct seed. As for "up to the tenth ground, not departing from recollecting the Buddha": in all of the ten grounds it is stated that "in all actions, one does not depart from recollecting the Buddha, recollecting the Dharma, recollecting the Saṅgha," and so forth. Above, the reason for explaining it first was clarified; next, from "the boundless ocean-treasury" onward, the commentary repeats and explains the distinctive names. In this, it first cites the sūtra and briefly explains it, and then from "yet there are briefly three" onward, it separately demonstrates its characteristics. Among the three meanings: first, definitely seeing many Buddhas; second, the Buddhas have many virtues; both of these are called the "boundless treasury" in terms of what is recollected. Third, from "boundless supreme virtues" onward, it is called a "treasury" in terms of that which recollected; within this there are three: first, intelligence; next, from "what are they?" onward, it inquires and explains, briefly presenting the three bodies; finally, from "there are no hindrances that are not eradicated" onward, the sūtra praises it. Therefore, at the conclusion, Bhadrapāla extensively enumerates various virtues to inquire into their cause, and the Buddha answers that they all arise from recollecting the Buddha. Regarding "a single phrase covers it": this is from the Analects: "The Master said: 'The three hundred poems [of the Odes] can be covered by a single phrase: "have no depraved thoughts."'" It means returning to correctness. Reciting the name of a single Buddha is also called "a single phrase"; taking the single phrase straightforwardly, it is just the single character "Buddha." Therefore, from the Fourth Patriarch onward, they exclusively recited the word "Buddha."
