Regarding the commentary's: "The second half re-explains..." and so forth: The first half states that it is "difficult to measure," which means the locus of mental activity is extinguished; "speech cannot reach it," which means the path of words is cut off. Now, why re-explain it by saying that all marks are quiescent and extinguished so that mind and words fail to reach it? The intended explanation is: quiescence and extinction signify non-conjunction, while "seen by all according to their inclinations" signifies conjunction. Now, it cannot be conceived or spoken of as either conjoined or unconjoined. Thus it is re-explained: herein, it is explained by lodging it in the three bodies. First, in terms of the dharmakāya's abiding in essence while universally responding: the aforementioned marklessness, quiescence, and extinction are its abiding essence; "seen by all according to their inclinations" is its universal response. Now, as the two senses negate each other, it is neither conjoined nor unconjoined. Its abiding essence and universal response are like empty space matching apertures that are square, round, large, or small. Second, from "conditioned arising cultivated and accomplished" onward: it is explained in terms of the saṃbhogakāya's cultivation-accomplishment tallying with reality. Like casting gold into an image, the image is entirely identical with gold; they also mutually negate each other and cannot be spoken of. Third, from "furthermore, conditions are precisely non-conditions" onward: it is explained in terms of the nirmāṇakāya responding to conditions. Like reflections, which exist yet are instantly empty, the two also mutually negate each other and cannot be attained through speech. The upper line having been explained, from "conjoined marks are abandoned" onward the lower line is explained, which can be understood.
