Regarding the commentary's phrase “If there is neither exposition nor demonstration, it is identical to the Buddha's teaching”: this is also from the chapter on Maudgalyāyana in the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa. The sūtra states: “One who preaches the Dharma has neither exposition nor demonstration; one who listens to the Dharma has neither hearing nor attainment.” Exposition refers to the path of teaching; demonstration refers to the path of realization. Having no hearing means not grasping according to words, which is true hearing. Having no attainment means the mind attains nothing, which is true realization without hearing and without attainment. Thus, in the later verse on the practice of listening to the Dharma, “this present exposition of Dharma merely has no exposition or demonstration.” It also accords with the verse in which Ratnacūḍa praises the Buddha: “Skillfully distinguishing the characteristics of all dharmas, yet unmoved regarding the ultimate truth.” Therefore, it says “identical to the Buddha.”
