31.35

疏「斯則流金爍石而不熱」者，即《莊子》中意，說於至人，大水稽天而不溺，大旱金石流火山燋而不熱。然其本意，非是水不能溺、火不能燒。意云：乘時處順不以水火而為患也，亦不橫為其所燒溺也。正同今意燒而不燒。但彼約順時，此約無性，理懸隔矣。

Regarding the Commentary's statement "This is melting metal and scorching stone without being hot": this is the meaning from *Zhuangzi*, speaking of the perfected person, for whom great waters reaching heaven do not drown him, and great droughts that melt metal and stone and scorch mountains do not burn him. However, its original intention is not that water cannot drown or that fire cannot burn; its meaning says: by according with the times and abiding in compliance, one does not take water and fire as afflictions, nor is one accidentally burned or drowned by them. This directly agrees with the present meaning of burning yet not burning. But that text relies on according with the times, whereas this relies on the lack of intrinsic nature; their principles are far apart.
