31.46

疏「次以長風」等者，唯喻一對、謂因不知緣、緣不知因。「答前好醜」者，謂前問云：心性是一，云何見有端正醜陋？故今答云：今所受報有妍媸者，皆由業緣異令報好醜，如風東西令物偃仰相各不同。

Regarding the commentary’s “Next, using the enduring wind” and so forth, it illustrates only a single pair—namely, cause does not know condition, and condition does not know cause. “Answering the preceding [objection on] beauty and ugliness” means the question above asked: “Since the mind-nature is one, why does one see handsome and ugly?” Therefore it now answers: that the retribution currently received has beauty and ugliness is entirely due to differences in karmic conditions causing the retribution to be good or bad, just as the wind blowing east or west makes things bend or lean back, their characteristics differing from each other.
