Regarding the commentary's "contemplating the body by means of the body": this borrows the words of the *Laozi*. That text states: "Contemplate the body by means of the body; contemplate the family by means of the family; contemplate the state by means of the state; contemplate the world by means of the world." Its intent is to take examples from one's own body nearby, and from external things far away; just like contemplating a single falling leaf to know that autumn has arrived under heaven. Although it does not understand emptiness and quiescence, by analogy it knows they are the same.
