33.78

疏「修有勤惰」等者，先答初意，總有六對，略收下喻。勤惰是總意。「障有淺深」，是樵濕喻。「機有生熟」，亦是上喻及鑽火喻。未熱數息，是機生故。「緣有具闕」，即闕緣求火下三喻。「功有厚薄」，即毛滴下三喻。

Regarding the commentary's phrase "practice has diligence and indolence" and so on: it first answers the first meaning, comprising six pairs in all, which concisely summarize the metaphors below. Diligence and indolence is the overarching idea. "Obstacles have shallowness and depth" corresponds to the metaphor of wet firewood. "Capacities have unripeness and ripeness" also corresponds to the metaphor above and the metaphor of drilling for fire; resting repeatedly before it is hot is due to unripened capacity. "Conditions have completeness and deficiency" corresponds to the three metaphors below of seeking fire while lacking conditions. "Efficacy has thickness and thinness" corresponds to the three metaphors below of the tip of a hair.
