Regarding the commentary's: "Briefly discerning the karmic functions of the ten gates of samādhi": the *Huanyuan guan* establishes one essence, two functions, three pervasions, four virtues, five cessations, and six contemplations, which also do not go beyond this. The 'one essence' is the essence of intrinsic nature, pure, round, and luminous, which serves universally as the essence of the ten dhyānas. The 'two functions' are: first, the permanently abiding function of the ocean-seal reflecting all phenomena, which is this first samādhi; second, the unimpeded function of the round and luminous dharmadhātu, which is the Avataṃsaka-samādhi. The 'three pervasions' are: first, a single dust particle universally pervading the dharmadhātu; second, a single dust particle inexhaustibly producing all; third, a single dust particle accommodating emptiness and existence; these three are all the samādhi gate of Indra's net. The 'four virtues' are: first, the virtue of wondrous functioning according to conditions without fixed boundary; second, the virtue of comportment sustaining rules; third, the virtue of being gentle, straightforward, and gathering sentient beings; fourth, the virtue of universally enduring suffering on behalf of sentient beings; which is the sixth samādhi gate immediately below. The 'five cessations' are: first, the cessation of illuminating phenomena as pure, open, and free from conditions; second, the cessation of contemplating persons as tranquil, quiet, and severed from desire; third, the cessation of nature arising in bustling multiplicity as natural spontaneity; fourth, the cessation of Dīpaṃkara manifesting thoughtlessness; fifth, the cessation of phenomena and principle profoundly penetrating non-marks. The 'six contemplations' are: first, the true emptiness contemplation of gathering objects into the mind; second, the wondrous existence contemplation of manifesting objects from the mind; third, the secret and perfect interpenetration contemplation of mind and objects; fourth, the contemplation of the wisdom-body manifesting reflections in all conditions; fifth, the mirror-image contemplation of multiple bodies entering one; sixth, the Indra's net contemplation of primary and secondary mutually manifesting. The above cessations and contemplations are all the samādhi gates of limitless quiescence and function; hence nothing is left out by these ten gates. For the extensive explanation of the one essence, six contemplations, and so forth, see the full discernment in the *Huanyuan guan*.
