36.28

疏「即一而三」下，二結三一通於止觀。即一而三，體隨相用故；即三而一，相用即體故。雙照三一，體用顯然；雙遮三一，互奪雙泯。謂即體同用故非一，即用同體故非三也。

Regarding the Commentary's statement from 'identical to the one yet being three' onward: this is the second part, concluding that the three and the one apply to both cessation and contemplation. Being identical to the one yet being three is because essence accords with characteristics and function; being identical to the three yet being one is because characteristics and function are identical to essence. Simultaneously illuminating the three and the one, essence and function are manifest; simultaneously negating the three and the one, mutually canceling, both are extinguished. That is, because essence is identical to function, it is not one; because function is identical to essence, it is not three.
